Sculptra is FDA-approved for the restoration of facial fat loss in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). As with various other cosmetic products, it is used "off-label" for cosmetic treatment.
Sculptra is one of the most unique dermal "fillers" available today. Sculptra does not depend on the injected components but on the reaction of the skin to those components. This reaction is a stimulation of the collage-building fibroblasts in the skin. In essence, Sculptra stimulates your skin to produce collagen which improves appearance.
Sculptra Composition
Sculptra is composed of tiny beads of a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid. Sculptra is not made from human or animal sources and does not require a skin test prior to use. Poly-L-Lactic acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible (does not harm the body), biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) material that has been widely used for over 25 years in medicine in dissolvable stitches and other surgical products. PLLA is broken down by the body to lactic acid – a natural substance found in the human body.
Each treatment takes around 30 minutes and involves injections of Sculptra using a very fine needle directly into the lower layers of the skin. The number of necessary injections depends on many factors.
