Cosmoderm® and Cosmoplast® for Wrinkle Correction

Collagen has been a mainstay wrinkle filler for more than 20 years. The first collagens were bovine derivatives, necessitating allergy testing. Recent technology brought about Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast which can be injected first visit. Because these collagen replacements are of natural substances, they do tend breakdown faster than other dermal fillers but they also cause the least amount of post-injection swelling...often none at all.

Cosmoplast and Cosmoderm

Cosmoplast/Cosmoderm are the only FDA-approved, commercially available dermal fillers that contain natural human collagen. CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast do not require a pre-treatment skin test, making them the first same-day, single-visit dermal fillers approved in the United States. This natural human collagen has been purified from dermal tissue grown under controlled laboratory conditions.

***Although collagens are no longer available, we are hoping for their return. For now, patients have a choice of hyaluronic gel fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm.*** Cosmoderm and CosmoPlast are injected just below the surface of the skin, filling in unwanted lines and wrinkles on many areas of the face and adding definition to the lip border. Cosmoplast and other fillers can also offer a temporary leveling for scars, including acne scars, to make the skin appear smooth.

Expected Results - Instant with Low Injection Discomfort

CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast provide results right away. Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast injections are formulated with Lidocaine to minimize discomfort. However, you may apply an anesthetic numbing cream to the area you want injected to help relieve some discomfort.

Duration of Cosmoplast and Cosmoderm

Treatment results vary from one to three months. The collagen is gradually absorbed by the body and your wrinkles will return. Some patients experience very quick breakdown of collagen. Scheduled treatments help maintain the desired level of correction.

Standards for Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast Production

Treatment with FDA-approved CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast is an effective way to aid in the correction of facial wrinkles, frown lines, skin folds, vermilion borders of the lip, scars and other soft tissue deficiencies.

The collagen in CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast is isolated, and purified from human dermal tissue grown under very strictly controlled laboratory conditions. The starting dermal fibroblasts are checked for known pathogens, and the resultant tissue undergoes a series of stringent tests to ensure that it is free from contaminants. In an extra step, the collagen is subjected to additional viral inactivation.

Differences between CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast

Both products are from the same source. CosmoPlast is a denser collagen and is used in the treatment of deeper lines and furrows and lip augmentation or lip border. CosmoDerm is used for fine lines such as crow's feet and the fine lines radiating above the lips while. Both are very natural in feel and appearance.

Are there advantages of Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast over other fillers?

Least potential for swelling. Both products are referred to as "camera ready", meaning they have the least potential for post-injection swelling. Typically any minimal swelling is gone in a few hours and at most less than 24. If you want the least "side-effect" from a filler injection, then Cosmoderm or Cosmoplast may be your best choice with Juvederm coming in at a close 2nd.

Best for ultra fine lines. In addition, Cosmoderm works particularly well for fine lines (such as those on the upper lip often referred to as smokers' lines) as well as creating a soft natural lip border. Dr. Sedgh will explain the different fillers and what each will accomplish for you.

Other Dermal Fillers to consider

Restylane and Perlane, Juvederm - hyaluronic acid fillers for wrinkles and lines; Radiesse, an injectable implant for the deep nasolabial folds, cheek augmentation and nose shaping; and Sculptra, injectable poly-l-lactic acid, which causes new collagen formation to replace lost facial fullness caused by aging.
